A real estate aerial photography guide

1. Pre-Requisites- Licensing

To operate a drone you will be flying under Part 107 which requires a remote pilot certificate. Otherwise known as a ‘drone pilot license’. This certificate entails passing an in-person written exam at one of the 700+ testing centres in the USA. Anyone who wishes to fly a drone for commercial reasons must pass this 60- question exam. The FAA’s rules regarding drone use changed in late 2016. You will need to have a drone operator’s license to sell your images.  If you are thinking of winging it without one, if you are found using your drone for commercial purposes without a license, you could incur a fine of more than $1,000.

2. Invest In A Quality Drone

It’s safe to say drones are an investment, costing anywhere from $500 to $5,000+. Keeping in mind the price tag investment, it is important to note if you have not used a drone before it is likely you will crash the drone on your initial flights. It maybe worth while starting off at the lower end before mastering your craft. Something to also consider is the camera mounting some drones contain a camera bracket rather than an actual camera. Attaching your own camera may save you a little bit of money if you already own a camera. That said, it is important to check as not all photography drones come with the ability to mount a camera.

3. Protect

Real Estate Photography is a professional industry  so as well as ensuring your drone is registered, you hold a Part 107, you will also want to consider protecting yourself from any damage you could accidentally cause. Drone insurance covers you from any work accidents and damage that your aircraft may suffer or cause. This is hugely important if you are new to flying a drone.
